Always Creating, Stitch by Stitch
Mairee O’Leary is a Burpengary East-based textile artist whose creative journey began at just nine years old, when she first learnt to knit from her mother. Since then, knitting has become a constant in her life — not just a hobby, but a daily rhythm.
Specialising in knitting and crochet, Mairee creates a wide range of practical and heartfelt pieces including baby sets, doll’s clothes, children’s jumpers and cardigans, and her popular crochet-topped towels. Her work is grounded in pattern-based techniques, brought to life through her love of colour and her ability to move fluidly between projects.
Mairee thrives on variety and rarely works on just one piece at a time. With multiple projects always on the go, she keeps her creativity active and engaged, ensuring there is always something new taking shape in her hands. For Mairee, creating is not something reserved for a particular time — it’s part of who she is. Early mornings, especially when sleep is elusive, often become quiet, productive moments filled with stitching and making.
As a long-standing member of the Artisans’ Guild, Mairee has spent many years contributing to the creative community. Her work has been regularly displayed and sold through both the Guild Gallery and shop, connecting her handmade pieces with the wider community.
Her work reflects not only skill and experience, but a deep, enduring love for making — one stitch at a time.
